Speculation on the late
Anglo-Saxon Kings of Lindsey
At the start of the 7th century the Anglo-Saxon peoples of modern-day England were made up circa thirty-six distinct peoples, all competing to establish kingdoms with legitimate leaders capable of transferring power from one generation to the next. By the mid 9th century, the thirty-six had consolidated into four dominant kingdoms – Northumbria, Mercia, East Anglia and Wessex.
About The Author
In my early twenties living in Lincolnshire and with an interest in history, I read that the Anglo-Saxon Kingdom of Lindsey had its own kings. Pre the internet, I set about reading everything that I could find on Lindsey and the Anglo-Saxon period. In short though, we couldn’t place a date or event to any of the Kings of Lindsey. Lindsey at this time remained unknown, often referred to as “somewhat obscure Kingdom”. Forty years later, in the age of the internet, with work by many scholars, we now have more source material available that continues to build our knowledge of Lindsey in this period. Archaeology continually adds to the picture.
About The Book
The Anglian Collection of royal genealogies provides lists for seven kingdoms. Lindsey is one of these kingdoms. The first five names on Lindsey’s list are clearly mythical figures, the following ten names are meant to represent historical people, however history provides no detail of any of their reigns.History is best communicated through the lives of Individuals, having no record of any king of Lindsey’s reign has left the Kingdom of Lindsey somewhat unknown. However significant events are recorded taking place within Lindsey – key battles of the period between East Anglia, Northumbria and Mercia. So, what part did the kings of Lindsey play? When did their linage end? What events led to the end of this once independent kingdom?
